Asia Bibi, the Christian Christian woman in Pakistan who was acquitted last year after she was imprisoned for 8 years, was sentenced to death, was released and went to Canada where her family was already, said the lawyer quoted by The Guardian .
Asia Bibi was sentenced to death for blasphemy eight years ago, but the Supreme Court in Pakistan canceled the decision
"It's an important day. Asia Bibi left Pakistan and arrived in Canada. She joined the family. Justice was done, "said the woman's lawyer.

The arrival of Asia Bibi in Canada thus ends an ordeal that lasted for nine years for her and her family. The woman had been jailed and sentenced to death, accused of insulting Prophet Mohammed when he drank water from his mug to Muslim farmers. When they asked him to convert, Asia Bibi refused, and they filed a complaint against her name.

Since she was acquitted and released from prison, Asia Bibi has been protected, since her acquittal for blasphemous accusations has sparked violent protests in Pakistan. The protesters blocked the entrance to Islamabad capital, but also to Karachi and stoned to police forces. They demanded that the woman be hanged in public for the accusations that were brought to her.

The protests organized by a Islamist group in Pakistan paralyzed the country, and the government gave up pressure and decided to allow a re-judgment of the appeal. But the Supreme Court upheld the acquittal in a final decision pronounced in January.

Canada then offered asylum to Asia Bibi, but Pakistan authorities prevented her from leaving. Now, the woman's lawyer said her arrival in Canada was the result of the efforts of diplomats, activists and "all those who stayed with them in the fight for freedom."
