NASA reported on Wednesday that it has lost the Opportunity robot, which has been investigating the surface of Mars for 15 years, among its most striking findings being evidence of the existence of water on the Red Planet, EFE reports.

According to researchers from the US Space Agency, the device did not survive the giant storm last summer when the robot was completely lost.

This is a mission whose end was completely unexpected because the robot was originally created to resist Martian surface for three months, reminded NASA administrator Jim Bridenstine, who occupies this post in April 2018, being called by US President Donald Trump.

"The objective was to move along several miles on Mars and to survive for 90 days. But we have stayed here for over 14 years , "Bridenstine said.

Opportunity gave the researchers a close look at Mars as it had not been seen before: rocks arranged in layers that resisted the erosion of water that was supposedly abundant on this planet millions of years ago, an indispensable condition for make life possible.

Due to this device and his twin twin brother, who "vanished" in 2010, NASA has had a continued robotic presence on Mars for almost 15 years.

But on Wednesday night, NASA's control center launched a final signal to Opportunity, and since it did not receive any response, it considered this last signal a robot's official "death" statement and declared its space mission ended.
